Did you ever want to add some bushes or cattails to a painting but thought what you were looking at was just too busy or complicated where you don't want to risk overdoing it? Well it can be done simply and it doesn't have to be daunting. In this workshop we will take a look at methods for painting all different kinds of bushes, reeds and any general scrub we may see in a field or hedgerow using simple application methods and color mixtures. I have come to understand that what I think are the best paintings that anyone can paint no matter the subject matter have been simplified and executed in a straightforward manner. We can use all types of brushes, pallet knives, paper towels, your finger and whatever tools we have at hand; yes pun intended. A rigger/liner is especially helpful for final touches.

Bring all the tools and supplies you would normally bring when you go out to paint. I don't have anything extra fancy but all of my tools and colors are available for you to try. I will demonstrate in the morning from a window in the warmth of the lodge unless the weather is spectacular being the first day of spring where instead we will take the demo outside. After lunch you will paint looking out from the windows or you can go outside if you would like. You can also bring photos if you wish.

Just how green is that green anyway? The colors of spring greens have a vibrancy like no other season. In this workshop, we will absolutely enjoy the spring weather while we paint in the outdoors, looking for opportunities to exploit all the new colors that have been absent during the winter months. We will be exploring all aspects of plein air painting in this two day workshop. I will demonstrate in the morning, fully explaining what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. After lunch, the group will paint on their own while I go around and give personal attention to each student.

This three-day workshop will focus on composition with loose but accurate drawing and correct space relationships. We will attempt to capture the light effect of the day through proper use of values and color. We will touch on all aspects of plein air painting and experience the joy of painting outside on location. My goal as a teacher, is to learn the vision of my students and then help them to achieve that vision through careful observation and paint application in whatever style you may have.

Each day I will demonstrate in oil in the morning. After lunch the group will paint while I go around and give personal attention to each student. Registered students will receive a materials list (what I use), recommended items to bring, and itinerary with daily locations.
